As the seasons shift and the hustle of life resumes post-summer, it’s the perfect time to focus on something many of us often neglect: self-care. September is recognized as Self-Care Awareness Month, a gentle reminder that taking care of ourselves is not only okay—it’s essential.

Self-care goes far beyond pampering or indulgence. It’s a deliberate act of kindness we show to ourselves, ensuring that our mental, emotional, and physical health are all nurtured. It’s about tuning into what we truly need and making it a priority in a world that often pushes us to put everything and everyone else first.

 

What is Self-Care?

Self-care is about cultivating habits that support our well-being, from taking time to rest to nourishing our bodies with healthy food and engaging in activities that bring joy and peace. It’s more than just a buzzword—it’s a commitment to showing up for yourself. For me, it’s all about balance, setting boundaries, nervous system regulation, reframing thoughts, and understanding that my body and mind deserve the same care I extend to others.

As a wellness coach and hormone specialist, I’ve found that real self-care comes from small, consistent actions that align with our values and goals. It could be something as simple as drinking a cup of matcha tea each morning, journaling for 10 minutes, or practicing hot yoga weekly to reset physically and mentally. Those routines help maintain my well-being while navigating family life and my career. They’re gentle reminders to slow down and recharge.

 

Why Self-Care is More Than Just a Trend

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the grind—work, responsibilities, and the constant overload of information from our screens. But what many don’t realize is that neglecting our own needs can lead to burnout, stress, overwhelm and eventually even physical health issues. That’s why self-care is so vital.

During Self-Care Awareness Month, we have the opportunity to reflect on our habits and choices. Are we nourishing our bodies with foods that give us energy? Are we taking time to breathe deeply, meditate, or simply pause?

As a kidney donor and someone who has dealt with health challenges,  I understand how easy it is to overlook our needs. Yet, through each experience, I’ve learned that self-care is not selfish—it’s essential for our long-term well-being.

Ideas for Embracing Self-Care This September:

  1. Create a Morning Routine: Start each day with a ritual that nurtures you, whether it’s a cup of tea, a walk, or reading a few pages of a book. This sets a positive tone for the rest of your day.
  2. Move Your Body: Whether it’s yoga, strength training, or a simple walk, moving your body is a form of self-love. Exercise not only strengthens our muscles but also supports mental clarity and mood.
  3. Nourish with Intent: Eating nutritious, balanced meals fuels our bodies and minds. Taking time to prepare and enjoy healthy food can transform a mundane task into an act of self-care. Aim for 30 grams of protein at your first meal.
  4. Rest: Sleep is crucial, especially for those of us balancing many roles. Make sleep a priority, aiming for 7-9 hours per night. No blue light after 9 pm (tv, laptop, phone, etc). Even naps count!
  5. Practice Mindfulness: Incorporating mindfulness into your daily life—whether through meditation, deep breathing, or simply being present in each moment—can reduce stress and improve your overall well-being. Try going for a 30 minute walk without your phone.
  6. Reconnect with Nature: Spend time outdoors, even if it’s just a few minutes each day. Nature has a way of grounding us and offering perspective, especially when life gets overwhelming.
  7. Set Boundaries: Protect your time and energy by learning to say “no” when needed. Setting boundaries helps you focus on what truly matters and prevents burnout.
  8. Seek Support: Surround yourself with a community that uplifts you. Whether it’s friends, family, or a coach, having people to share your journey with makes the process more enjoyable and sustainable.

    This September, I encourage you to pause, reflect, and embrace self-care as a non-negotiable part of your life. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup. By nurturing yourself, you become better equipped to support those around you—whether it’s your family, friends, or colleagues.
